Katie Couric was more concerned about preserving her lofty status at NBC than protecting the vulnerable women who became the targets of “Today” show letch Matt Lauer, insiders spilled.

“Katie was well aware of Matt’s behavior behind the scenes — heck, her office was right next to his,” one source snitched. “But she chose to look the other way to maintain her interests at the network!” In her book “Going There,” the former “Today” queen and failed “CBS Evening News” anchor admitted she “heard the whispers” about Lauer, her co-host of nine years who was axed in 2017 amid sexual misconduct allegations.

But tipsters dished the trashy tell-all, slated for release on Oct. 26, has also shattered the 64-year-old newswoman’s reputation! In the book, Katie revealed her refusal to help up-and-coming female colleagues, such as Deborah Norville — who she called “off-putting to viewers” — and Ashleigh Banfield, because mentoring the dynamic newbie would have been “self-sabotage!”

Ashleigh called Katie’s comments “heartbreaking,” and insiders said she’s considering legal action against NBC because she suspects Couric deliberately derailed her career!

A source noted catty Katie considered other news gals rivals and added, “No wonder none of the women who claimed they’d been sexually harassed by Matt considered confiding in her. They knew she wasn’t on their side.”

In the book, tone-deaf, Katie joked Matt “could charm the pants off any celebrity,” but sources — and her own words — suggested she was aware of Lauer’s alleged seedy side! She writes about Matt — her “Today” co-anchor from 1997 to 2006 — inviting a producer to his office and insisting she wear a “skirt that came off easily.” She also claimed he expressed his fears of being ensnared in the #MeToo movement’s “witch hunt!”

Katie admitted she thought it “gross” Lauer was cheating on then-wife Annette Roque and taking advantage of a younger staffer — but claimed his crude behavior was par for the course at the network!

She cited “a don’t-ask-don’t tell culture where anything goes, and everything did.”

But industry insiders called her comments a cop-out! “Katie could have helped those women,” a source said. “Instead, she chooses to write about the ‘culture’ years later. That just doesn’t cut it!”

Katie’s admissions have made her “the most hated person to ever walk the halls of NBC,” one insider said. CBS was reportedly so appalled by the book they pulled the plug on a planned interview and banned her from promoting it on their network. Now, spies said talks at NBC to follow suit were “at the highest level of the network!”

MY REMARKS

Wow, I don’t know what to say. It sounded like Couric thought Matt was a horny cheating husband, like most husbands in Hollywood. But reading this, I can see why many would believe that she was insensitive. I mean, they’ve been friends for decades.

However, us females have to stick together, despite our history with the opposite sex.
