MORE THAN TWO DECADES AFTER DIANA’S TRAGIC DEATH, THE QUEEN CONFESSES HER REMORSE OVER HOW SHE TREATED THE PRINCESS OF WALES

Wracked with guilt, the monarch is haunted by the memory of the late Princess of Wales.

ON Sept. 5, 1997, five days after Princess Diana’s shocking death at age 36 in a Paris car crash, Queen Elizabeth II gave a rare televised speech and honored the late Princess of Wales.

“She was an exceptional and gifted human being,” said Her Majesty, who’d been widely criticized for remaining silent in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy.

“I admired and respected her for her energy and her commitment to others.” It was a surprising sentiment coming from the queen — for years, it was widely reported there was no love lost between her and her former daughter-in-law.

Now, as her health continues to decline, a source tells Star exclusively that the queen, 95, is full of regret over how she treated Diana when she was alive and is set to reveal all in a blockbuster BBC interview.

The queen has never talked about her relationship with Diana, but Her Majesty has written about it in her diaries apparently, says the source.

Recently a member of the queen’s inner circle gained access to her diaries, where she expresses ‘extreme remorse’ over blacklisting Diana from the family. The queen writes that if she could turn back time, she would have done things very differently.

TEARS AND BETRAYAL

It’s no secret Diana was miserable during her failed marriage to Prince Charles — but her pleas for help fell on deaf ears. According to the source, the queen still carries guilt over how she handled their 1996 split.

In her diary, she writes about a secret fight she had with Diana at Buckingham Palace, when she revealed she wanted to divorce Charles, says the source. Charles, now 73, was cheating on Diana with his current wife. Camilla Bowles. He reportedly confessed his true feelings for Camilla to Diana the night before their 1981 wedding. Diana was overwhelmed, to say the least. But the queen didn’t do much to help; she just said the two should divorce.

In secret tapes that were released in 1994, Diana recalled, “sobbing” to the queen and asking her guidance. “So I went to the top lady and said, I don’t know what I should do,” Diana recounted, She said, “I don’t know what you should do.” And that was it. That was help.

The queen is haunted by the memory, says the source. She wishes she would have been a better listener and sympathized with Diana more. At the time the queen wanted to brush Diana’s problems under the rug, adds the source: Mental health wasn’t really spoken about then. The queen is much more aware of things like that these days.

A WHOLE NEW OUTLOOK

The monarch–who will celebrate 70 years on the throne with Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June–has gained perspective over the years. “She regrets calling Diana a “rebel” and trouble-maker because the reality is if it wasn’t presence and popularity, the royal family would have become a sinking ship,” says the source.

The drama surrounding Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s megaxit has given the queen a newfound appreciation for Diana. After watching Meghan, says the source. Meghan, 40, and Harry, 37, left the royal family in dramatic fashion in early 2020. The queen admits that at least Diana was always graceful and chivalrous, unlike Meghan.

Huh, Diana publically spoke very ill about the Royal Family and Charles.

Diana’s 1995 bombshell interview with Martin Bashir – during which she famously “there were three of us” in her marriage to Charles–was believed to be the last straw for the queen. But in 2021 it was revealed Bashier had employed deceptive methods including allegedly using fake bank statements to claim the royal family was spying on her to get access to Diana. The queen realized now that Diana was duped.

Things haven’t been the same for the royals since the loss of Diana. Right after she died, royal watchers slammed the family saying they failed miserably by not expressing their sadness sooner. The queen can’t help but wonder what might have been–and wishes she’d told Diana she was a beautiful soul while she had the chance. She realizes it was Diana who kept fans engaged, not Charles says the sources. The monarchy will soon be left in Charles and Camilla’s hands, but the queen knows Diana would’ve done a better job replacing her than anyone else. They had a complicated relationship, but they also had a certain respect for each other–which the queen will make clear in her unprecedented BBC interview.
