ANNOUNCES NEW TITLES and VOWS TO KEEP EVERYTHING THE SAME

An emotional King Charles III returned to Buckingham Palace on Friday for the first time as the UK’s new monarch — before giving a solemn speech honoring his “darling” late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, and mapping out a future for the royal family.

“I speak to you today with feelings of profound sorrow,” Charles, 73, said as he began his nine-minute, pretaped address.

“Queen Elizabeth was a life well lived; a promise with destiny kept and she is mourned most deeply in her passing,” he said.

In one of his first acts as monarch, the king bestowed the titles of Prince and Princess of Wales on his eldest son, William, and William’s wife, Kate — the same titles that Charles and his late ex-wife, Diana, held.

He also extended an olive branch to his son and daughter-in-law, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who quit royal life because of the bad press they were receiving.

“I want also to express my love for Harry and Meghan. As they continue to build their lives overseas,” he said.

In addition to the speech, the day was a whirlwind of events:

Charles held his first official audience with British Prime Minister Liz Truss, during which he told her that his mother’s death was a “moment I’ve been dreading.”

After being named Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton was said to be fully prepared, but looking to forge “her own path,” royal sources revealed.

Despite an initial announcement that she and Harry would travel together, Markle wound up not joining her husband in dashing to the queen’s Balmoral Castle on Thursday because “tensions were so high,” a palace source told The Post.

Charles’ younger siblings, Prince Edward and Princess Anne remembered their mother fondly in a BBC special documentary that aired Friday, recalling her humor and the “jaw-dropping” moment she appeared in the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics.

Paul McCartney also paid tribute to the queen, hailing her “fabulous sense of humor” and “dignity” during the eight or nine times they met.

A public memorial service for the queen at London’s St. Paul’s Cathedral drew thousands of mourners, including Truss and other high-ranking politicians.

President Biden said he would attend the queen’s funeral, but confirmed he had not yet spoken to Charles following his accession to the throne.

On his first full day of duties as king, Charles left Balmoral Castle in Scotland and flew to London, where mourners have been filling the streets near Buckingham Palace at the start of a 10-day mourning period.

Charles and his wife, Camilla, the new queen consort, arrived at the palace, where the crowd shouted, “Well done, Charlie,” and “God save the king.”

The couple shook hands with mourners, including one who kissed Charles on the cheek, and walked slowly by the mass of flowers that had been left by the palace gates for the queen.

Charles’ inexperience in office seemed to show when he was seen on video entering the palace and apparently not knowing what door to use.

In his speech, broadcast at 6 p.m. London time, Charles vowed to follow in his mother’s footsteps, pledging to serve with the same “loyalty, respect and love” as she did over her seven-decade reign.

Charles also praised his late mother as an inspiration and thanked her for her “dedication and devotion as sovereign.”

“To my darling Mama, as you begin your last great journey to join my dear late Papa, I want simply to say this: Thank you,” he said, referring to his father, Prince Philip, who died in April last year.

“Thank you for your love and devotion to our family and to the family of nations you have served so diligently all these years.”

He added, “Throughout her life, Her Majesty the Queen — my beloved mother — was an inspiration and example to me and to all my family, and we owe her the most heartfelt debt any family can owe to their mother; for her love, affection, guidance, understanding, and example.”

Charles also reflected on the promise Elizabeth made on her 21st birthday, in 1947, to devote her life to service.

“That was more than a promise: It was a profound personal commitment that defined her whole life. She made sacrifices for duty,” Charles said. “Her dedication and devotion as sovereign never wavered, through times of change and progress, through times of joy and celebration, and through times of sadness and loss.”

Charles, who has spent much of his 73 years preparing for his new role, acknowledged that his life “will, of course, change” as he ascends to the throne, adding that he will pass on some of his official and charitable duties to others.

“This is also a time of change for my family. I count on the loving help of my darling wife, Camilla,” Charles said.

Charles didn’t specify whether Prince William, under his new title, would take on the duties being relinquished by his father.

The now-king had been known as the Prince of Wales for more than five decades until Elizabeth’s death.
