‘BRUTALITY INFLICTED’ IN ATTACKS: DA Predator targeting vulnerable women held in rape & kidnap of 3 as cops seek others
Cops are seeking more possible victims of a 28-year-old sexual predator charged in Queens with kidnapping and raping a 21-year old woman and two teenage girls — one of whom he allegedly held hostage for more than four months.
“It is hard to put into words the brutality inflicted upon these poor girls,” said Queens DA Melinda Katz.
NYPD special victims detectives on Jan. 6 arrested Andres Portilla, 28, on a raft of rape, kidnapping and sexual assault counts, as well as charges of child endangerment.
“This guy is a sexual predator,” said NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig. “It looks like he’s preying on girls who are runaways or have some issues. If there are any other victims out there, they should call us.”
At arraignment over the weekend in Queens Criminal Court, Portilla was ordered held without bail. At another hearing Thursday, the order keeping him jailed was renewed.
Two complaints in Queens Criminal Court accuse Portilla of physically terrorizing his victims, and say the horror began Sept. 1 for the 15-year-old, when she agreed to move into Portilla’s apartment in Queens.
Portilla is accused of repeatedly assaulting the teen, who police said was reported missing in August from Wyandanch, L.I. On one occasion, a complaint says, Portilla “stabbed the victim in the leg with a knife at the knee and dragged it upward toward her hip, causing substantial pain and bleeding.”
Portilla is also accused of hitting the teen in the eye with a wrench. A doctor later found the 15-year-old had suffered an orbital fracture at her right eye, court papers say. Around Nov. 1, a criminal complaint says, Portilla forced the teen to move into his car, and refused to let her leave.
The attacks continued — and from Nov. 1 to Jan. 6, Portilla repeatedly raped and sexually assaulted her in the car continued, the complaint says. Portilla lured a second 15-year old victim into his car on Dec. 16 at the intersection of 91st Place and Corona Ave. in a business district in Elmhurst, says another criminal complaint.
As soon as the second 15-year old got inside, the complaint says, Portilla told her: “You’re not getting out of the car.”
The complaint does not say why or how Portilla got the second 15-year-old into the car — but it does say the second victim saw another teenage girl was also a passenger. Portilla blindfolded his new victim, ordered her to remove her clothes, and raped and assaulted her, the complaint says.
It is unclear from the complaint how long that second 15-year-old victim was held in the car. The third victim in the case encountered Portilla and the first 15-year-old victim early on Jan. 1, court papers say. That victim, a 21-year-old woman, left a 7-Eleven on Queens Plaza South in Long Island City a few hours after midnight and was looking for a place to charge her cellphone when she encountered Portilla and the 15-year-old girl in a 2008 red Honda Accord.
The two offered to charge the woman’s phone in the car — but once she got into the vehicle, Portilla locked the doors and sped off, Queens prosecutors and NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig said Thursday.
When the 21-year-old refused to have sex, Portilla beat her with a wrench and raped her, says a criminal complaint. The sexual assaults inside the car continued for the next three days, says the complaint.
The 21-year-old’s family, meanwhile, filed a missing person report with police. As Portilla scrolled through the 21-year old’s cell phone on Jan. 4, he saw a missing person flyer about her while scrolling her phone, said police. The woman’s family also spoke to the media, and her mother said she missed her daughter and wanted her home.
After seeing the flyer, Portilla dropped the 21-year-old from his car and drove off. When the 21-year-old got home, she told police and her family of her ordeal.
When police arrested Portilla in his car in Jackson Heights on Jan. 6, they also found the 15-year-old who had been with him since September, and took her for medical treatment. Portilla was convicted of second-degree menacing in Queens on Aug. 15, court papers say. Details of that case were not available Thursday.
