Prince William’s recent visit to the Middle East was a fruitful one. On Feb. 10, the royal headed to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, where he joined government officials and schoolchildren in planting mangrove trees at a nature sanctuary. Later, he celebrated UK National Day and shook hands with throngs of fans before taking center stage at Expo 2020 Dubai, where he spoke passionately about climate change. “It was great to spend time celebrating sustainability, collaboration and innovation,” he wrote on Instagram of the whirlwind trip.
It was all in a day’s work for the laser-focused father of three, who shares Prince George, 8, Princess Charlotte, 6, and Prince Louis, 3, with his wife, Duchess Kate, 40. Despite years of royal drama dominating the news, insiders say the future King of England is feeling optimistic about what’s ahead as his 40th birthday approaches in June and his role within the monarchy grows. “William is excited about this new chapter in his life and the challenges he’ll be facing,” says one source, noting his “goal for the next decade” is to be as prepared as possible for when he takes the throne. “He has high ambitions of creating the perfect balance between being a respected role model and decision-maker and relatable to the public,” continues the source. “He wants to be the people’s prince.”

After going through a rough patch with Kate in 2018, he’s vowed to go be the best husband he can be. Remember William was accused of stepping out on Kate while she was pregnant with Louis with family friend Rose Hanbury. They’ve become quite a team in recent years. “William and Kate have taken on additional duties and it’s brought them closer together,” says the first source, adding that they’re both “extremely excited” about their reported upcoming tour to the Caribbean in the spring. When they’re not working to tend to the kids, the first source says the pair are homebodies. “They’ll watch Netflix order takeout, play Scrabble and enjoy a few glasses of wine,” dishes the source. “That’s not say William isn’t romantic-he surprised Kate with 50 roses on Valentine’s Day,” the sources adds, “but for both of them it’s the simple things that count.”
Business Matters
In the months ahead, William will be working alongside his father, Prince Charles, as he prepares to eventually take the crown. “William knows what he’s doing, but Charles has had 70 years of experience and will ensure that his son is up to speed,” says the first source. (the source notes Charles and William both want to slim down the monarchy to “make sure that core members work hard to show their value.” The second source says William had no issue when his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, 95, announced Charles’s wife, Camilla, 74, would be known as Queen consort when Charles becomes king. “The history between Diana and Camilla is what it is,” says the source. “William greatly admires Camilla’s work ethic and overall dedication to the monarchy.”
TIME TO REFELCT
Plans are already underway for William’s 40 birthday celebration. According to the second source, the queen is arranging an intimate private event at Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle ” where William’s close family members and friends will toast the occasion.”
The source says William is feeling reflective as the milestone approaches. “He’s an emotional guy, and of course. “He’s an emotional guy, and of course, he looks back at all the good and bad things that happened,” explains the source. He has yet to forgive his brother, Prince Harry, 37, for “criticizing the royals so publicly,” the sources. “It’s something he’ll never understand.”
But, adds the source, “the bottom line is William’s happy and looking forward to the future. He’s determined to honor his grandmother’s legacy and lead the monarchy into the next generation, with Kate and his kids at his side.”
William is ready to shake things up within the monarchy. The determined prince — who’s made a point of tackling real issues including climate change and mental health challenges versus taking on a more ceremonial public role — “has a lot of fresh ideas,” says one source, adding that he plans to trim the royal fat straight away. “The way William sees it, less people means less drama.”
A second source adds William has clashed with his uncle Prince Andrew over the years and is “very disturbed” by his sexual abuse scandal. (Andrew denies the allegations and was stripped of his official titles last month.) “William is mild-mannered at heart, but he’s not afraid to speak out when something bothers him — even if it means butting heads with people.”
