IF YOU think ELIZABETH TAYLOR looks thin in this photo from 1958’s Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, that’s because tragedy had struck — she had just lost her third husband, producer MIKE TODD, in a plane crash at the start of filming!

Within three weeks, the plucky star returned to the set, where she played Maggie “The Cat” Pollitt opposite PAUL NEWMAN as Brick Pollitt, the often-drunk son of a rich Southern cotton baron. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Tennessee Williams, the movie garnered six Oscar nominations, including for Liz and Paul, but went home with none.
